Six Tracks To TobyMac

In addition to putting out some of Contemporary Christian Music's most popular albums such as Eye On It, Portable Sounds, and Momentum, TobyMac has been a featured singer in a LOT of other artist's albums. I like to joke (without any malice) that Air1 is "TobyMac radio" because in a five song set, there's a pretty good chance Toby McKeehan was singing in three of them. Jesus Freak by DC Talk might be followed by TobyMac's Steal My Show followed by Jamie Grace singing Hold Me featuring (of course) TobyMac! You get the picture.

As a fan of the teamup, whether it be Batman and Green Arrow, or Britt Nicole and Lecrae, it's a lot of fun to see stars team up. The energy and enthusiasm of the cameo artist appearance is vocally and stylistically entertaining, but also a fantastic way of building fan bases.

Among the most generous Christian artists when it comes to being "featured" on other singer's tracks is TobyMac. Of course, TobyMac has appeared with newcomers like Jamie Grace that he has helped to propel into successful careers. He has also appeared with classic bands like the Peter Furler led Newsboys. I made a Spotify playlist of some of my favorite TobyMac cameos called Six Tracks To TobyMac.

Toby McKeehan's propensity for showing up on other people's albums led me to the conclusion that TobyMac is at the center of the contemporary Christian music universe. Naturally, I say that in the same sense that Kevin Bacon is at the center of the film universe in '6 degrees of Kevin Bacon'. While I proudly and loudly proclaim that Jesus is the center of all truly Christian music, just for fun, let's play Six Tracks To TobyMac just to see how true the claim about Toby's centrality really is.

See my blog for the description and instructions for the game, and let's start playing.

The Spotify playlist Six Tracks to TobyMac features newer stars like Jamie Grace and Mandisa, as well as near classic performers such as Geoff Moore and Rebecca St. James. The Newsboys, Royal Tailor, and Group 1 Crew round out the list.
