Petra - Judas' Kiss

Songwriters: Bob Hartman

©1982 Dawn Treader Music

Judas' Kiss from Petra's album More Power To Ya is one of Petra's trademark songs. On Judas' Kiss, Petra comes strong with a classic rock sound, but Bob Hartman certainly wasn't writing War and Peace. The lyrics are few, but extremely poignant. The chorus follows:

"It must be like another thorn stuck in your brow
It must be like another close friend's broken vow
It must be like another nail right through your wrist
It must be just like, just like Judas' Kiss
"
- Bob Hartman

In very few words, Bob Hartman paints a picture showing how Jesus feels about the unfaithfulness of His followers. How does Jesus feel when his "lamb has gone astray"? What is it like for Him, when we his children, disobey? Hartman nails it, so to speak! It is like the pain of the cross, and worse, the pain of betrayal from a close friend.

Petra's theme for more than 30 years was definitely not, "How to be a casual Christian." Judas' Kiss is a reminder to believers, fight the "War" within that says to give up and walk away. Then, embrace the "Peace" of the one who accepted our kiss of betrayal, then died on the cross that we might be forgiven.

But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" Luke 22:48 (NASB)
