Manafest - Every Time You Run

Songwriters: Chris Greenwood, Trevor Mcnevan, Adam David Messinger

Every Time You Run from Manafest's album Chase is definitely a play-it-again song. Melodic, yet gritty, the song by Manafest also features the lead singer of Thousand Foot Krutch, Trevor McNevan. Every Time You Run tells the story of someone who has lost his way, aimlessly squandering his life. His turning point comes when he thinks back to when he was younger, in church with his mom. The lyrics that really stand out to me and capture this thought follow:

"I know I need to man up or sit down
Stand up and get out of this crowd
I thought of a song my mom used to sing in church
But it's been so long I can't remember the words

- Chris Greenwood, Trevor Mcnevan, Adam David Messinger

The chorus of the song gives the key to redemption for this man from his self-inflicted pain. It talks about when he runs, God will always still be there for him.

Every Time You Run does produce a thrill in the "joy of the Lord" at the end for me, in my very sheltered life with my own very sheltered kids. However, I also feel a sadness when it reminds me of some of the students at church. I know they are on the precipice, messing around with entry drugs like marijuana and spice.

I don't know if the songwriters were thinking of Isaiah's words when they stated God's faithfulness to always be there. However, for those living on the edge, dealing with rising waters and burning flames made by their own bad choices, I hope they will remember the LORD is there with them.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. Isaiah 43:2 (NIV)
