FM Static - Dear Diary

Songwriters: FM Static

©2009 Tooth & Nail Records

FM Static's album Dear Diary is written to be more like the soundtrack of a musical than the typical collection of radio-ready tracks that normally appear on CDs. Dear Diary tells the story of the new kid in town, as he chronicles this critical time of his life in his diary. The new kid has just moved to town. He's dealing with being an outsider at school, and not being that comfortable at home, either. He seems to be keeping a positive attitude, and then the big surprise in his life is meeting a girl that reminds him of fireworks. She is so different to him, she seems to be from a different planet. And, she loves Jesus. That begins his own struggle to come to a faith of his own. The chorus of The Voyage of Beliefs follows:

"And it's all fine, and it's all well,
I really want to find what I believe for myself,
'Cause when you're gone,
And I'm still here,
I won't have you to tell me that I should be there
"
- FM Static

It's not a smooth and straight path to heaven for the new kid from there. He goes through more ups and downs, but he makes his confession of faith in Take Me As I Am:

Take me as I am, 'cause I'm going,
I was too scared to start,
And now I'm too scared to let go.
- FM Static

Being too scared to let go of God is sometimes the first step in our faith journey.

Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6:12 (NIV)

Take Me As I Am is the only blockbuster single song on Dear Diary. However, Boy Meets Girl (And Vice Versa) and The Voyage of Beliefs are both strong songs in carrying forward the story.

Dear Diary is better as a whole than as a collection of parts. It's especially worthwhile to have the CD Insert to look at with its Dear Diary entries to tie the songs together and the clever doodle-style art that goes with it.
